Sun Safety Tips
July 7, 2022
Here at Cumberland Pointe, we want to ensure your loved ones are protected as well as the members of our community. Our Admissions Coordinator, Jenny, went around the town of Saint Clairsville delivering sunscreen bottles to our local independent living centers, senior centers and assisted living centers to promote sun safety.

It's always important to protect your skin from sun damage throughout the year. Too much sun exposure can cause burns, skin aging, eye damage, and skin cancer. Skin cancer is on the rise in the U.S.. There were over 106,000 new cases of skin melanomas projected in 2021. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, with an estimated 1.3 million people living with melanoma of the skin.
Sunscreen products are evaluated continuously to ensure they are safe and effective to use. To help protect against sunburn, aging and skin cancer, use a broad-spectrum sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 daily. When used with other sun protection measures, you lower your risk of developing any of these concerns.
Below are some tips you and your loved ones can use to help reduce the risk of sun damage to your skin:
Between 10 AM and 2 PM, the sun’s rays are at their most intense. Limiting your time in the sun between those hours can help reduce exposure to harmful rays.
Wearing vivid clothing while in the sun can block the UV rays causing greater protection. Also, wearing wide brim hats can help guard against the sun’s rays.
Broad-spectrum sunscreen offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. You want a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher for the best protection. Be sure to reapply after being in water or every two hours.
Choose sunglasses with a UV 400 rating or 100% UV protection.
Ask your health care provider if you take any medication that can cause sun sensitivities. If so, you may want to take precautions before heading out into the sun.
With these helpful tips in mind, everyone at Cumberland Pointe wishes our community a wonderful summer! Stay safe, wear sunscreen and enjoy some fun in the sun!
