Suicide Awareness Month
September 15, 2022
September is known as Suicide Awareness Month. The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) highlights this month with their campaign,
“Together for Mental Health.” This campaign encourages people to speak up and advocate for better mental health care. We thought it was important at Cumberland Pointe to recognize the month and provide crucial information and resources to help spread awareness on this cause.
Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. Most often, suicide is the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts should not be considered normal and can relate to a more serious issue.
Elderly adults make up 12% of the US population but account for 18% of all suicide deaths. Suicide rates for the elderly increase between the ages of 75 to 84, and the number continues to increase after age 85. Death by overdose, self- starvation, dehydration and “accidents” are known as
“Silent Suicides.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis situation, do not be afraid to reach out. Please know you are not alone.
